Community, Creativity, and Giving Back to Revive the Spirit of the Game

Poker has always been more than cards and chips to me.

At its best, poker is community. It’s storytelling. It’s laughter around a table with people you might never otherwise meet in your life.

That’s the spirit I’m bringing back as host of an event this weekend here in Upstate New York on March 8, 2026 at Voorheesville American Legion, which will kick off at 8:30 AM.

Through Upstate Punters and several partnering poker communities, we’re hosting a live tournament built around a simple yet powerful mission:

Make Poker Fun Again.

This event is more than a tournament. It’s an experience. Its purpose is to remind people why so many of us fell in love with the game in the first place, and why we keep hoping for a return to that first-love feeling.

Turning Poker into an Experience

This tournament is themed for comedy, roleplaying, action, drama, and big moments. The obvious choice, therefore, is professional wrestling, and we’re leaning all the way into it.

Dress Up & Come Ready to Rumble

Players are encouraged to dress up as their favorite wrestlers, with bonus chips awarded for costumes and creativity. Dealers will be in referee attire, and the winner of the tournament will take home a six-pound, metal-plated championship belt from TrophySmack.

Make, Capture & Share Big Moments

We’ve set up a photo station with a wrestling ring backdrop so players can take pictures together throughout the day.

Dealers will wear GoPros to capture moments at the tables, and a dedicated videographer will be filming the entire event. The goal is simple: capturing the funny, dramatic, and memorable moments that make poker special.

Learn from Professional Player Alex Fitzgerald

Professional poker player, educator, and author Alex Fitzgerald is flying in for the event.

Alex will host a two-hour seminar and live Q&A session the morning of the tournament. Anyone who attends the seminar will also receive bonus tournament chips.

Win Small Prizes & Compete for First Place

We’ve added small prizes and fun extras, shirts, stickers, a wrestling encyclopedia, and a chocolate “Oscar” from Uncle Sam’s Candy, a local chocolate company, which will go to whoever delivers the best overall performance during the day.

What counts as a “performance,” you may be wondering. Performance at this event means stepping into your character and committing yourself to the bit; the more fun and memorable you make the table’s experience, the better.

There’s only one prize-related rule: as the host, I can’t win the Best Performance award. That one belongs to the players.

Why This Event & Why Now

For a long time, I’ve heard people say that poker has lost something. Something beautiful, pure, and alluring.

You hear it on podcasts. You see it on social media. Players and poker room staff talk about how the game feels different now.

And I understand why.

The strategic depth of poker has grown tremendously. Solvers and advanced strategy have pushed the game forward in incredible ways. But for many, that same complexity can make the game feel intimidating or inaccessible.

Most people don’t want to think about solver outputs, node-locking tendencies, and Nash equilibrium ranges. Some people reading this article and playing in our tournament won’t know or even care to know what that last sentence means, because that’s not why they come to play.

They want to be entertained. They want to have fun.

What drew many of us to poker wasn’t the technical analysis.

It was the people.

I remember watching poker on ESPN and seeing players like Phil Hellmuth make grand entrances into the World Series of Poker with costumes and an entourage. Those moments were entertaining. They made the game feel larger than life.

The characters, the stories, and the personalities made poker exciting.

That’s what I want to help bring back.

Playing for Something Bigger Than a Prize Pool

While the goal is to create a fun and memorable experience for players and staff, this event is also about giving back.

Ten percent of the tournament proceeds will be donated to the Hudson Region Autism Society.

Several members of our poker community have children or family members affected by autism or are on the spectrum themselves. It’s something that touches our group personally, and we wanted to support an organization doing meaningful work in that space.

Poker communities can be incredibly supportive.

At the table, we’re trying to eliminate each other from the tournament. Away from the table, we help each other, support each other, and build friendships.

This event reflects that.
